Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by Chiropractors is known as an adjustment. The purpose of an adjustment is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement. Restrictions can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Adjustments of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However, patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

Doctors of chiropractic may assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing, and diagnostic imaging to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate. Chiropractors will readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient's condition, or the condition warrants co-management in conjunction with other members of the health care team.

Osteopathy is a gentle form of manual therapy based on the philosophy that the structure of your body directly affects how it will function, and that it functions collectively as a whole. This means if there is a restriction or pain in one area, then all other parts of the body will be affected in some way. My role as an osteopathic practitioner is to find the root cause of this restriction by using an in depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology and collective mechanics. Osteopathy follows a belief in the body's ability to self-regulate and self-heal. It focuses on facilitating the health of joints and muscles, helping to strengthen the framework of the body, ensuring optimal function of the nervous, lymphatic and circulatory systems.

Courtney is a Member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association (OOA) and OSTCAN certified.

Hi I’m Courtney! My journey working in the health and wellness field began in 2011. As an athlete myself, I was passionate about fitness and completed schooling in Fitness and Health Science. This allowed me to work one-on-one with clients to achieve their goals. Feeling called to learn more about hands on healing, I went back to school for a Bachelors in Athletic Therapy. This combined my love for sports with my passion to heal the body. Throughout this schooling, I longed for a deeper understanding of the body and how it heals. It was then that I would meet an Osteopathic Practitioner who would inspire me to return to school, and complete an intensive 4-year program at the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy in Hamilton. I had found my calling.

Osteopathy’s approach to looking at the body with such an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology and collective mechanics, was unparalleled to anything I had learned prior. I was able to obtain results with patients like never before.

I am a licensed member of the Ontario Osteopathic Association (OOA/OSTCAN), and excited to meet new patients and help them to find and remove the root cause of their pain. In my spare time I love doing yoga, pilates, meditation and exploring the outdoors.

Hello Durham Sport & Wellness!

I am very excited to announce that I have returned to Durham Sport & Wellness effective September 1, 2020! I was lucky enough to be here for a short stay in 2018, and am very happy to be back to Ajax again!

Some of you may remember me, but for those who I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.

I grew up in Belleville, and did my undergraduate degree in Health Science at the University of Western Ontario. I knew I wanted to work in health, but I wasn’t yet sure in what capacity.

After graduating, I decided to take some time to digest what I had learned and further consider exactly what healthcare profession to enter into next. During these valuable years I worked for the Ontario March of Dimes, an organization dedicated to providing services for individuals with a wide range of disabilities. I had the opportunity to work closely with stroke survivors and people living with Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, and brain injuries, and to continue my studies of neurorehabilitation with the Ontario Brain Injury Association. Realizing how important it was to really spend time with clients to understand them and the support that they needed, I felt called to refine my skills and continue to work with people to support them to reach their personal health goals. A friend had introduced me to naturopathic medicine, and I immediately recognized the potential for running a practice with the luxury of time to really get to know my patients. From there, I began my next four years of study at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto.

Now, as a Naturopathic Doctor, I love working with people to uncover the roots of their individual health concerns and establish practical approaches to healing ailments, regaining vitality, and aging well. With this in mind my goal is to help people to understand their current state of health, to work proactively to address challenges and risk factors, and to integrate lifestyle choices that naturally foster balance and wellbeing.

A bit about my approach: Every patient has their own unique story to tell. I really enjoy taking the time to meet my patients where they are, and together, we work towards reaching their personal health goals in a way that is achievable and long-lasting. Patient education is very important to me, and I love to spend time helping people understand how their bodies work, and the rationale and research behind the treatment recommendations that I’ve chosen. I use a variety of treatments and because Naturopathic medicine is individualized medicine, I may emphasize one of the major treatment modalities more or less with each patient, depending on what is going to work best for them and their lifestyle. Often I will reach for herbal medicines, clinical nutrition, and lifestyle counselling with my patients. I also often create my treatment plans in a way that draws from Traditional Chinese Medicine and may include clinical acupuncture treatments with the incorporated diet and lifestyle recommendations. I have a special interest in healthy aging, brain health, and palliative care, but I’ve always been more of a ‘family health’ style ND. I’m here to help the whole family from fertility planning to end of life care.
